Why Is Balayage Hair Colour So Popular?

Balayage is one of the most popular hair colour techniques around. It not only creates a natural look but it's also low maintenance compared with traditional highlights. With traditional hair colour methods you tend to get a more noticeable regrowth line (although this obviously depends on the colour you choose).

Our hair colour experts will work with your skin tone, haircut and natural hair growth patterns to create a balayage tailored just for you. Because the colour is painted on by hand, your Karen Wright hair colour expert can choose where best to place the highlights to best complement your features and tones. Balayage can look completely natural, unless you opt for a bright fashion colour balayage!

What Is The Difference Between Balayage, Ombré & Sombré?

Balayage is a beautifully blended highlighting technique which grows lighter towards the ends of the hair. There are many varieties of balayage including root stretching or colour melting.

Ombré is a more bold hair colour technique where you can see a contrast between the hair colours used as it graduates from darker roots to lighter ends. You can also try a reverse ombré, a popular technique where lighter roots graduate into much darker ends.

Balayage and Ombre are often confused. Book an in-depth colour consultation with one of our hair colour experts before your appointment, we can help find the best technique for you.

Another popular hair colour technique is Sombré (soft ombré), which is a more subtle version of ombré. The appearance of dark roots is less harsh and the lighter hair colour is seamlessly melted together. Sombré works with multiple shades and tones throughout the hair to add sensational dimension and texture.

Does Balayage Work on Natural Hair?

Balayage works on all hair textures although in some ways curly hair is easier because your Karen Wright colour expert can pick out each curl you want to apply colour to. The colour choice is dependent on the finished look you want to achieve, not the texture of your hair.

What Are Babylights and Highlights?

Balayage creates a sun-kissed look with natural looking hair colour and less noticeable regrowth lines.

You are probably already familiar with full head highlights, where lots of strands of hair are coloured in a uniform pattern to lift the hair colour. We can also do half head highlights, quarter head highlights or add a few well-placed highlights around your face or wherever else you desire them.

When it comes to babylights, we also use the traditional highlighting process but use hair colour to lift tiny sections of hair to give an incredibly subtle highlight. Babylights are very delicate, usually white blonde highlights, that are added around the hairline to mimic the soft and bright hair colour on young children.

How Do I Prepare For a Balayage Hair Appointment?

At Karen Wright Salon In Thornton Heath, Croydon, we believe that your hair colour consultation is an essential part of the balayage process.

Book a balayage consultation with our highly trained colourists at least 48 hours before your appointment so that they can give you a quick skin allergy test. We will also assess your hair type and texture, discuss your likes and dislikes and explain the hair colour process with you.

If possible, bring some inspirational balayage photos that you love to your consultation so that we can discuss how to make the style work for you. Your Karen Wright colourist will assess your skin tone to find a blend of hair colours that work perfectly for you.

The length of your balayage appointment is dependant on the style and depth of the highlights you require, your hair type and how much hair you have. Your Karen Wright colour specialist will be able to give you an estimate of how long your balayage appointment will take at your consultation.
